This will be my first SpeedHack ever, having missed entering last year's by a hairsbreadth. I live in Japan, so I will begin the competition at 9pm...right after getting home from my job as a game programmer.
Just because I'm a game programmer, don't get your expectations up. My goal here is just to complete an entry.
I'm really hoping that there will be no networking involved. On the other hand, I'll be happy if physics is involved. Very happy.

I've got to figure something out and fast...

Just thought I'd show everyone what I'll be working with.

Faeries that are out to destroy cities! First lower the population of the city by destroying buildings until people start running for the hospitals. Then, destroy the hospitals!
I'll figure something out. I'll probably make use of the Act of Generosity, but I don't want to use it on the resolution rule. I'm going to support widescreen, dammit!
-
An incomplete faerie.
I'm going to sleep now.
-
A very preliminary screenshot.
-
I just wasted precious minutes touching up the graphics. I doubled the dimensions of the faerie. I still have to draw some wings for her!
-
I need to make it bigger, but it's a go. This should damage helicopters, harrier jets, missiles and renegade faeries that have sided with the humans.
The cities will be randomly generated offline, tweaked by hand and then released into the wild.
I want to have three characters. A faerie (already drawn), a pixie and a wisp (as in Will 'o Wisp).
Still a lot left to do!
-
Woohoo! I just nailed a sleeper bug that's been hiding in my graphics module for a long time. After SpeedHack is over, I'll have to go into another one of my projects and replace the module.
Widescreen has been working for quite a while now.
-
The damnable tile engine won't work! It's not a trivial thing, but I thought that it would be easier than this.
Not giving up, though.
Eating candy now. Bad for my teeth.
-
I did it! It took precious hours away, but I bloody well did it. I threw out a bunch of code and re-wrote a less efficient version. It's not efficient, but it hasn't shown any problems.
I still need to fix some stuff about the really tall buildings and I need to get the game play going, at least a bit.
-
More fighting with the tile engine I thought I had fixed.
Our faerie has just laid waste to a small island city. There's more to come!
Time for sleep.
-
I lost almost an hour hunting down this bug. An hour! For this! Argh!
-
Our faerie can use faerie fire now. It's not doing anything as of yet, but it will.
I finally took care of her directions (animated gif!).
-
Here's some faerie fire in action.
I think I'll be opting out of the dialogue rule.

Well, as done as it's getting by the deadline. No sound effect, but we've got music.
This competition was a lot of fun. I intend to be in the next one too.
Here's my main menu.
-
My game is missing most of the gameplay I wanted. What I wanted to do (and most likely will do before uploading this to the depot) is the following:
Enemies: none in the SpeedHack version
Sounds: I've only got music
Cities: There are supposed to be four cities, each with different styles of building
Characters: There's supposed to be a faerie, a pixie and a wisp
Code Organization: It's called Speed*Hack* for a reason
Pause Screen: None yet
Better Main Menu: The current one is pretty cool, but I can do better
Better Building Destruction: Very preliminary
Shadows: Yep
Art: I'm a programmer
Victory Condition: Right now, the player destroys all of the buildings and then has nothing to do. No fanfare. No next level. No "Congratulations!"
